Amy Huberman on renovating her €1.8m Victorian home: ‘It needs a lot of love’

Amy Huberman has opened up about renovating her new Victorian home, based in in the Dublin 6 suburb of Rathmines.

Earlier this year, the actress and her former Irish rugby star husband Brian O’Driscoll received the green light to revamp their new home on Palmerston Road, which they purchased for a cool €1.8 million.

Now, Amy has admitted that the renovation has caused her new “kitchen obsession”.

“I’ve got a thing for kitchens and that’s new. I’m looking forward to the house but I’m sure it’s going to be a long enough process, because it’s an old house and it needs a lot of love,” she told the Irish Independent.

“I want to stay true to the charm of the old house, but it needs to feel like it’s a functional family home for the age we are living in, because everyone lived differently in Victorian times,” she said.

The Striking Out star, who is mum to two kids Sadie and Billy, also admitted that she’s been looking at moodboards and Pinterest for inspiration.

“I’m definitely more into interiors than before; I think you evolve to what your life circumstances are. In my 20s, I was renting in different places and interiors weren’t really on my radar, or I didn’t have the disposable income to be worried about painting walls.

“I love subway tiles but with rich wood and rugs. I love vintage rugs, so even if it’s a clean look with an old, faded rug, that’s what I’m thinking of in my head.

“We did a little bit of work to our own house a couple of years ago and I learned a lot through that. I’ve learned to make a decision and to move on. Just go with the gut and say: ‘Those are the tiles – we’re going for it’,” she explained.

The lavish home was previously divided into three flats, however, the couple want to make it one large family home once again as they’re extending it from 280 square metres to 363 square metres.

Their plans include a whopping six bedrooms, open-plan kitchen, dining room, living room area with large windows, and a large family room and office.

The pair also plan to reinstate the stairs from the ground to upper ground level, and replace the modern PVC windows and repoint the period red brick blocks.
