Brendan Gleeson: 'We DO need to up the standard of Irish films… stop being so thin-skinned'

Hollywood star Brendan Gleeson has defended John Michael McDonagh – after he claimed all Irish films were awful.

The Calvary director said homegrown flicks “aren’t very good” and we try to avoid watching Irish films.

But Brendan insisted that McDonagh – who told US audiences that Calvary isn’t “like all those terrible Irish movies you’ve seen before” – wasn’t trying to offend.

He added: “Irish people are terribly thin-skinned and McDonagh likes to rattle cages.”

And Brendan said that McDonagh did give back the €975,000 it was given by the Irish Film Board.

“I think it’s important to remember that the money was repaid in full. And there’s no harm in being told we need to up our standards.”

He added that “those most offended by the comments are the ones who don’t bother going to see Irish films”.

Family: Brendan is starring with sons in new play

Yesterday, Goss.ie told how Brendan will appear on stage alongside his sons Brian and Domhnall for the first time in The Walworth Farce next year.

He said: “I am really looking forward to working with the two lads – not just because they’re my sons but because I respect both Domhnall and Brian as actors,”

“I also love performing in the Olympia and going to Maureen’s Bar after the show.”
