Star Wars gets the go ahead to film on Skellig Michael

Star Wars has been given the go ahead to film scenes on Skellig Michael.

Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Heather Humphries granted permission for the sci-fi flick to use the iconic site.

The Kerry location is a UNESCO heritage site and issues were raised by An Taisce about the endangered species of wildlife that inhabit the area but the Minister said that strict environmental rules will be put in place.

The National Parks and Wildlife Service and the National Monuments Service will have a staff member on site at all times during filming to ensure all guidelines are followed.

It isn’t the first time the franchise used the Coastal location for shooting as Star Wars The Force Awakens was shot last year on the island with our very own Domhnall Gleeson and is due for release later this year.

Star Wars: Episode IX isn’t due for release until 2019.
