Chris Hughes shows his support for ex Jesy Nelson amid ‘blackfishing’ accusations

Chris Hughes has shown support for his ex girlfriend Jesy Nelson following her recent “blackfishing” controversy.

The Love Island star split from the singer last March after 16 months together, but the pair have remained close friends.

Last month, Jesy came under fire after the release of the music video for her debut solo single ‘Boyz’, as many accused her of altering her appearance to seem Black or racially ambiguous.

The former Little Mix star’s ex Chris has since admitted he is a fan of the show in an interview with new! magazine.

The reality star said: “No matter what industry or line of work you’re in, it’s always good to do things different. The song sounded good to me on the radio.”

Speaking on the ongoing controversy surrounding the single, Chris said he doesn’t use Twitter so wouldn’t be able to comment.

He said: “I haven’t seen or read too much into it. I wouldn’t be able to comment.”

Jesy addressed the blackfishing claims during a recent interview with Vulture, saying: “The whole time I was in Little Mix I never got any of that. And then I came out of [the band] and people all of a sudden were saying it.”

“I wasn’t on social media around that time, so I let my team [deal with it], because that was when I’d just left. But I mean, like, I love Black culture. I love Black music. That’s all I know; it’s what I grew up on.”

“I’m very aware that I’m a white British woman; I’ve never said that I wasn’t.”

In a separate statement addressing the accusations, Jesy added: “I take all those comments made seriously. I would never intentionally do anything to make myself look racially ambiguous, so that’s why I was initially shocked that the term was directed at me.”
