Celebrities are being asked to wear all black to the IFTAs – after only three women nominated for Best Actress

Celebrities are being asked to wear all black to the IFTAs, after only three women were nominated in the Best Actress category.

Some of Hollywood’s biggest stars donned all black outfits to the Golden Globes this month, to show their solidarity with women all over the world not being paid correctly, or suffering sexual harassment in the work place.

While that movement was all to back the Time’s Up campaign, now Irish stars are being called to wear black, after the gender row that broke out amid IFTA nominations.

Speaking to the Sunday Business Post, Sarah Kieran of Media Lawyer Solicitors and co-chairwoman of Women in Film and Television said it would be a mark of respect.

“Attendees could show their support by wearing black to the IFTA ceremony like Saoirse Ronan did in the Golden Globes,” she told the publication.

“The responsibility is on all of us in the business to ensure that women are given leading roles that exemplify the role women play in our society,” she told the publication.

Áine Moriarty, chief executive of the Irish Film and Television Academy, told the Sunday Business Post that she had been not been contacted about a campaign to wear black but said the team would be “open to it”.

Only three women were nominated for Best Actress; Sarah Bolger, Saoirse Ronan and Ann Skelly but there were five nominations for Best Actor.

After the nominations were revealed, Liam Neeson exclusively told Goss.ie that he could see a “revolution” was happening with gender.
