The Handmaid’s Tale was aired last night during the Super Bowl, and it urged the people of America to “wake up”.
The hit series is set in Gilead, a totalitarian society in what used to be part of the United States, which is ruled by a fundamentalist regime that treats women as property of the state,
In the series, the population is faced with disasters including a plummeting birth rate – which leads to fertile women being enslaved and forced into bearing children for the rich.
The season three trailer is a play on President Ronald Reagan’s 1984 re-election ad known as “Morning in America”.

The ad reveals a shocking scene in which the Washington Monument becomes a giant cross, with ‘WAKE UP AMERICA. MORNING’S OVER’ written across the screen in large red letters.
Fans praised the ad for its strong message, and one Twitter user wrote: “My jaw dropped when the “It’s morning again in America” #Hulu ad started. Well played #handmaidstale.”
