{"id":232329,"date":"2020-11-19T15:21:17","date_gmt":"2020-11-19T15:21:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/goss.ie\/?p=232329"},"modified":"2020-11-19T15:21:17","modified_gmt":"2020-11-19T15:21:17","slug":"bbc-radio-1-reveal-they-wont-play-original-fairytale-of-new-york","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/goss.ie\/showbiz\/bbc-radio-1-reveal-they-wont-play-original-fairytale-of-new-york-232329","title":{"rendered":"BBC Radio 1 reveal they won&#8217;t play original Fairytale of New York"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BBC Radio 1 have revealed they won&#8217;t play the original Fairytale of New York.<\/p>\n<p>The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl&#8217;s hit track has become a Christmas classic, played across the globe ahead of the festive season, but in recent years has been the subject of debate.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s lyrics feature a word which is offensive to the LGBT community, with the radio station announcing they would be playing a censored version on their airwaves.<\/p>\n<p>A BBC spokesperson said: &#8220;We know the song is considered a Christmas classic and we will continue to play it this year, with our radio stations choosing the version of the song most relevant for their audience.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/j9jbdgZidu8?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Back in 2018, Pogues&#8217; frontman Shane MacGowen released a statement explaining why he included the word in the song\u2019s lyrics.<\/p>\n<p>He said at the time: \u201cThe word was used by the character because it fitted with the way she would speak and with her character.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe is not supposed to be a nice person, or even a wholesome person.
