The Sligo star decided to pack his bags and head to the states when the band called it quits back in 2012.

And now the singer has admitted he needed to leave the country to clear his mind.

“I wanted to get away, and not have to be here answering a million questions about what I was going to do next,” he explained.

“Don’t get me wrong, I left Westlife on a high because  I felt it was the right time to finish.

“I don’t look back and have regrets. I genuinely loved Westlife and the craic and what we got to do, but it ended at the right time,” he added.

Speaking to the Sunday World, Mark who now goes by Markus, said he is excited about his solo career, and believes his time away from Ireland will help with his career going forward.

“I’m not jaded after 14 years in the business Westlife. On the contrary I feel really fresh. Going to America was good for me because Westlife weren’t famous in the states and I was able to blend in.

“It gave me the chance to get my head together and to figure out naturally what I was going to do,” he explained.
