Rex Ryan reveals dad Gerry named him for success: 'He thought it would look good on a poster'

Rex Ryan has revealed his father Gerry was always very supportive of his acting career – and even named him Rex because he thought it would look good on a poster.

The Pilgrim actor feels he was lucky that the broadcasting legend always supported his showbiz dreams as many parents don’t.

“Some actors might have the issue, there’s always the question of, ‘what do your parents think of you going into this difficult industry?’ That was never an issue,” he said.

Star: Gerry knew Rex would get into showbiz

“Dad said that he named be Rex Ryan because he thought it would look nice on a poster. He was always really supportive of it. He gave me the confidence to go after it.”

Rex admitted he still thinks about his dad every day almost five years after his death.

“Time is a good healer. I don’t think it ever leaves, it sticks with you,” he told The John Murray Show on RTE Radio 1.

“If you had a good relationship it’s easy to just be happy for what happened and what you had together. There’s not too much wallowing in misery.”

Meanwhile, the Dublin native has been expanding his acting repertoire by moving into movies and has already wrapped his first feature flick.

“I just want to keep working, I just want to do good work and be happy in the work I’m doing and see where that takes me,” he said.

“I adore the theatre and I’m madly in love with it, but yeah of course I want to do films. I just did my first film called Monged. I did that with John Connors from Love/Hate.”

“It was really different to theatre, I was not used to it at all. A lot of waiting around and a lot of drinking coffee, but I enjoyed it, it was a really good experience.”
