Actress Sarah Greene admits she was upset over 'hateful tweets'

Sarah Greene has revealed she was left hurt when viewers were sending “hateful tweets” about RTE series Rebellion.

The Cork native, who played May Lacey in the show, said she was upset to see the series getting bad reviews and especially didn’t like the way viewers reacted on Twitter.

“I get upset. It didn’t get great reviews at home — but on Twitter people were really hateful about it,” she told the Irish Sun.

“I had to stop looking at Twitter to see what people were saying about it because if people want to bitch and moan they can, but I don’t want to read about it.”

Upset: Viewers took to Twitter to give out

While many complained of historical inaccuracies in the show and that it was “boring”, Sarah said some viewers weren’t happy with the way the series sympathised with British characters.

“Some people thought we were too sympathetic with the British but all we were trying to do was tell an honest story about what happened,” she explained.

“There were a lot of people who didn’t want the Rising to happen. It was only a very small faction of people who went out and fought.

“A lot of people worked for British rule. They served king and country but that didn’t mean they hated Ireland.

New series: Sarah said she would love to return

“People got caught in the crossfire and everybody has their own view about what happened. Rebellion wasn’t a history lesson, it was a fictional story we wanted to tell.

“So you are never going to make everyone happy,” she added.

Despite criticism from viewers RTE are already in talks to continue the series and Sarah said she would love to reprise her role.

“It’s all just whispers, nothing is concrete. If all the gang were back, yes I would go back because it was a really happy time.

“There could be a sequel because we could go up all the way to 1922,” she explained.
