Renée Zellweger gets emotional saying goodbye to Bridget Jones

Renée Zellweger shared that she shed “real tears” bidding farewell to her iconic character Bridget Jones when she wrapped filming for Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy.

Speaking with PEOPLE on the red carpet of the movie’s New York City premiere, Renée explained that she’s feeling emotional about the movie’s coming to an end.

Referring to fellow cast mates, who include Colin Firth and Hugh Grant, the 55-year-old actress said: “We’ve been forging this friendship for over 25 years together through this journey, shared journey, Bridget Jones’ journey.”

She described this journey coming to an end as “both wonderful and really sad” and when asked if this is definitely the last movie in the franchise, she replied: “That’s what I understand. That’s what Colin said.”

Although its been almost ten years since we saw Renée as Bridget on our screens, the Academy Award winner stated that she had absolutely no hesitation to returning to the role and said: “Bridget feels like an old friend.”

When asked about her flawless British accent, the Texas-born actress admitted that she held onto it the whole time she was filming and when she was around London.

“I wouldn’t say it was method acting as much as it was lazy,” the star shared. “I didn’t want to start every morning trying to make my vowels sound right. I just wanted it to be a habit. I didn’t want to work that hard!”

Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy is now out in cinemas and is the fourth and final instalment of the beloved Bridget Jones series.
