Jamie Foxx has finally revealed details of his mystery health scare, which caused him to lose “20 days of memory”.
In April 2023, fans were left concerned when the actor’s family revealed he was recovering from a “medical complication”.
The 56-year-old has since revealed he suffered “a brain bleed that led to a stroke”.
Opening up about his condition for the first time in a Netflix comedy special, Jamie said his illness is still a “mystery” and “we still don’t know exactly what happened to me”.
Jamie explained that he had been filming the Netflix spy action film Back in Action with Cameron Diaz last year when he started to feel unwell with a “bad headache”.
His friends took him to see a doctor in Atlanta who gave him a cortisone shot and then “sent me home”, but his sister Deidra Dixon “knew something was wrong” and took him to the hospital.
“She didn’t know anything about Piedmont Hospital, but she had a hunch that some angels were in there,” he recalled.
“Ya’ll saved my life just 400 yards away from here in Piedmont hospital. They put me back together again.”
Jamie had collapsed at this stage, and his sister was told that he was “having a brain bleed that led to a stroke”.
“You don’t dream that something would go wrong, but when something does go wrong, you need a sister,” he told the audience.
Jamie’s sister was told that he required urgent surgery, or else he would die.
“My sister knelt down outside the operating room and prayed the whole time,” he continued.
“Your life doesn’t flash before your face. It was kind of oddly peaceful. I say this all the time; ‘I saw the tunnel. I didn’t see the light. I was in that tunnel, though’. It was hot in that tunnel.”
Jamie said his family protected him from public scrutiny and the extent of his illness, which left him unable to walk for a period of time.
“Twenty days I don’t remember, but on May 4th I woke up,” he said. “When I woke up, I found myself in a wheelchair. I couldn’t walk.”
