Landmark film on David Bowie’s life to be made

The late singer passed away in January 2016

The BBC are making a “landmark film” on David Bowie’s life.

The singer passed away on January 10th 2016 after secretly battling with cancer for 18 months.

Director Francis Whately had previously filmed a documentary on the late musician in 2013, David Bowie: Five Years.

“I always hoped that I would make another film about Bowie as we were only able to scratch the surface in the first film, but I just didn’t expect it to be this soon,” he said.

The new film, The Last Five Years, will be a continuation of Francis’ last documentary on David but he hopes to re-examine his life more and look at his last works like The Next Day, Black Star and the musical Lazarus.

“However, looking at Bowie’s extraordinary creativity during the last five years of his life has allowed me to re-examine his life’s work and move beyond the simplistic view that his career was simply predicated on change – Bowie the chameleon,” Francis told the BBC.

“Instead, I would like to show how the changes were often superficial, but the core themes in his work were entirely consistent – alienation, mortality and fame.”

BBC Four will also be broadcasting Bowie At The BBC, a compilation of rare footage from the archive of the star’s performances and interviews at the BBC spanning more than 40 years.

BBC Radio 2 will be dedicating an entire documentary to the star’s hit Life On Mars while 6 Music will mark what would have been David’s 70th birthday on Sunday the 8th of January with a special day of programming.
