Demi Lovato: ‘I thought I’d be dead by 21’

Demi Lovato thought she’d be dead by 21.

The 23-year-old singer checked into rehab in 2010 at the age of 19 to seek treatment for alcohol and drug abuse, as well as an eating disorder and self-harming and admitted she didn’t expect to live very long.

“I lived fast and I was going to die young. I didn’t think I would make it to 21,” she told American Way magazine.

Demi also admitted she feared a Britney Spears-style meltdown, saying: “I was definitely like, ‘Oh crap. In three years, that’s going to be me.'”

However, she has managed to turn her life around and has become an inspiration for young women, something she struggled with at first.

Demi explained: “I didn’t go into treatment thinking, ‘OK, now I’m going to be an inspiration’. At times I was resentful for having that kind of responsibility, but now, it’s really become a part of my life. It holds me accountable.”

Demi recently split from Wilmer Valderrama after six years together but insisted the pair will stay friends.

In a statement on Instagram, they said: “After almost 6 loving and wonderful years together, we have decided to end our relationship.

“This was an incredibly difficult decision for both of us, but we have realized more than anything that we are better as best friends. We will always be supportive of one another. Thank you to everyone who has offered us kindness and support over the years.
“With only love, Wilmer & Demi.”
