The BBC hope to make Planet Earth 3 before David Attenborough turns 100

Planet Earth II received immense praise

The BBC want to make Planet Earth 3 before David Attenborough turns 100, it has been reported.

The English broadcaster has had a television career spanning over seventy years, and some of his most influential work has been the Planet Earth series.

The finale of the latest instalment of the series, Planet Earth II, attracted more young viewers than the final of this year’s X Factor.

Planet Earth 3: The BBC have reportedly begun plans for the third instalment of the series | BBC

BBC producer Mike Gunton told the Daily Star, that they would be “crazy” to rule out making another series, but they would “also be crazy to say it will be here in three years or even five years’ time.”

“We love working with Sir David and I think he loves working with us, and we want that to last as long as possible,” he said.

If the series follows the usual pattern, Planet Earth 3 would be released in 2026, which would make Sir David 100 years old.

The producer also said, “When he decides he doesn’t want to do anymore, we will have to rethink how we make these programmes.”

It is obvious that all involved think it’s a bad idea to rush series three, with David himself telling the Telegraph, “these stories take time, devotion and money.”

He also added, “Since we depend on the natural world, understanding it is absolutely paramount. Television can provide that link better than ever before.”
