WATCH: Ed Sheeran’s recent trip to Africa left him in ‘shock and disbelief’

Ed Sheeran has revealed his recent trip to Africa for Comic Relief left him in “shock and disbelief”.

The flame-haired artist has been heavily involved with this year’s Comic Relief effort, and recently visited Liberia to see the charity’s work in action.

However, in an essay for The Sun, the Shape Of You singer said that the experience was completely “heartbreaking” and changed his perception regarding the level of poverty in second-world countries.

Ed began the essay by detailing his plans to visit West Point, the largest and most dangerous slum in Liberia’s capital Monrovia.

Upon arriving, the Suffolk native said he was keen to “concentrate on the positives” but that was made near-impossible by the “terrible conditions” he witnessed.

He explained, “I’ve always known there is poverty in the world, but witnessing it first-hand makes me realise I had absolutely no idea of what poverty actually means.

“I’m torn between utter shock that children around the world are living like this, and a rising sense of guilt that at the end of the filming I get to leave.”
