Tonight’s Love Island to open with a tribute to Mike Thalassitis

Tonight’s premier episode of the new season of Love Island is reported to open with a tribute to the late Mike Thalassitis.

The former islander committed suicide aged 26, after appearing on the show in 2017.

A Love Island insider told The Mirror newspaper: “Producers wanted to pay their respects to Mike and show his friends, family and fans that he was a part of the Love Island family and is missed deeply by everyone.”

“It is a really difficult subject but they wanted to address it rather than sweep it under the carpet or pretend it hasn’t happened.”

It was previously reported that the show would not be acknowledging his memory.

Another former Love Island contestant Sophie Gradon, 32, also committed suicide in 2018.

This year, additional measures are being put in place to protect contestant’s mental health.

“The duty of care has become greater” show host Caroline Flack told Fabulous magazine.

“But this is a wider issue. We should all be looking out for each other more.”
