The inspiration behind Ed Sheeran’s unusual name for his daughter has been revealed.

The singer and his wife Cherry Seaborn welcomed their first child last week – named Lyra Antarctica Seaborn Sheeran (L.A.S.S).

According to The Sun, the name Lyra was inspired by the lead character in their favourite book series, His Dark Materials.

An insider has also claimed that they used the middle name Antarctica because their daughter was conceived there last year.

A source said: “They view Antarctica as a very special place and also felt it worked as a name, too.”

“They wanted their daughter’s names to truly mean something. The full name is also an acronym of Lass which they thought was sweet.”

Ed announced his daughter’s arrival on Tuesday, by sharing a sweet post on Instagram.

The 29-year-old wrote: “A quick message from me as I have some personal news that I wanted to share with you…”

“Last week, with the help of an amazing delivery team, Cherry gave birth to our beautiful and healthy daughter – Lyra Antarctica Seaborn Sheeran.”

“We are completely in love with her. Both mum and baby are doing amazing and we are on cloud nine over here. We hope that you can respect our privacy at this time. Lots of love and I’ll see you when it’s time to come back, Ed.”
