Acute myeloid leukaemia is a type of blood cancer that affects the bone marrow.
According to reports Gemma started feeling unwell last weekend and went to the doctor three times before then going to hospital.
Speaking to The Mirror, Simon said their son Ethan, aged just 8, has said he wants “mummy back”.
“He said he wants Playmobil and other gifts for Christmas, but most of all ‘I want mummy back’, and I can’t help him with that.”
The Sky Sports anchor said his wife’s condition deteriorated rapidly within hours, she was then transferred to another hospital and begun chemotherapy immediately.
“For the first couple of days she was responding well,” he said.
“But yesterday morning she went downhill very quickly. She had bleeding on the brain. I was told yesterday morning she would be gone in a few hours.’
