Royal biographer claims Prince William dumped Kate Middleton ‘over the phone’ in early dating days

Royal biographer Robert Lacey has claimed that Prince William dumped Kate Middleton “over the phone” when they briefly split in 2007.

Battle of Brothers, written by the historical consultant to the Netflix series The Crown, details the allegedly tumultuous relationship between brothers Prince William and Prince Harry.

The book is being serialised in the Daily Mail before it’s release on October 20, with one extract from the book detailing the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s break-up.

The author claimed that Prince William called Kate while she was in a meeting in a fashion store she was working in: “She shut the door for more than an hour. When she came out, she was single.”

Kate and William met while studying at the University of St Andrews back in 2001, and began dating in 2003.

The couple’s brief split in 2007 only lasted 10 weeks, before they rekindled their romance.

After announcing their engagement in 2010, Kate opened up about the split in an interview with ITV News’s political editor Tom Bradby: “At the time I wasn’t very happy about it, but it actually made me a stronger person.

“You find out things about yourself that maybe you hadn’t realized. I think you can get quite consumed by a relationship when you are younger, and I really valued that time for me as well although I didn’t think it at the time.”

One year after announcing their engagement, Kate and William watched by millions worldwide as they said ‘I do’ at Westminster Abbey in London.

They have since welcomed three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

Battle of Brothers: William and Harry – the Friendship and the Fueds will “address the unique and complex relationship at the heart of the royal family’s recent woes.”

The book is set for release on October 20th.
