Prince Charles’ friend describes Meghan Markle’s family as ‘frightfully common’

An old friend of Prince Charles and Camilla has described Meghan Markle’s family as “frightfully common”.

Nicky Halsam, an interior designer, said it must have been a relief for the Royal family when Meghan’s father Thomas couldn’t make the wedding – and went on to describe him as a “huge lump”.

He told the Daily Mail, “They’re frightfully common. It would have been awful if that huge lump [Meghan’s father] had been there.”

“The royals probably don’t quite know how to deal with them,” he added.

Thomas Markle famously cancelled his appearance at the Royal wedding because of a heart operation, just days after he was exposed for selling staged paparazzi photos.

Although Nicky has negative feelings towards Thomas, he made an exception for Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland.

He said, “One person who wasn’t common was her mother.”

The interior designer went on to criticise Meghan’s £200,000 Givenchy wedding dress, which was designed by Clare Waight Keller.

He said, “I didn’t very much like her dress — it didn’t fit, among other things. It should have been made of thinner stuff, it seemed to be made of concrete.”

Born to one of Queen Victoria’s goddaughters, Nicky is a good friend of the Royal family, and used to socialise with the late Princess Diana, and previously worked for Prince Charles.
