Phillip Schofield reveals how his in-laws reacted to him coming out as gay

Phillip Schofield has revealed how his parents-in-law reacted to him coming out as gay.

Back in February, the 58-year-old publicly came out as gay by releasing an emotional statement on social media – with the support of his wife Steph and their two daughters.

The presenter and his wife have been married for 27 years, with Phillip opening up about revealing his sexuality to her parents while making Christmas dinner.

Speaking to Chris Evans on his podcast How to Wow, he explained: “During Christmas, I was cleaning. I clean when I’m stressed, I tidy up.”

“So I was cleaning a surface at Christmas, wiping it down and Jill, my wonderful mother-in-law, said, ‘You are the perfect man, you know’.

“And I just said, ‘No Jill, no I’m not’, but it was the sweetest thing to say. So yeah, big support from them.”

Phillip also received a sweet text from his father-in-law John, which read: “I may be your pa-in-law but think of me as your surrogate pa, and long may it continue. As long as Steph’s OK we don’t have a problem.”

“Then you text him back: ‘Thank you so much, Captain, I’m so very deeply sorry to disappoint you,'”, with John replying: “Nothing to be sorry for here son so cheer up!”

In the same podcast, Phillip revealed he and Steph hadn’t even discussed getting a divorce.

“We’re picking our way through. It’s a work in progress,” he said of their marriage.

“I’m still married to Steph. With divorce… we’ve not discussed that at all.”
