New book claims Meghan Markle was ‘distraught’ when palace aides scolded her over wearing a necklace

A new book has claimed Meghan Markle was left “distraught” after palace aides scolded her over wearing a necklace.

In the early days of her romance with Prince Harry, Meghan was photographed wearing a gold chain with the initials “H” and “M” on it – which didn’t sit well with the royal family.

In the upcoming biography Finding Freedom, authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand claim Meghan received a call from a senior Kensington Palace aide, after she was papped wearing the necklace in December 2016.

“She was advised that wearing such a necklace only served to encourage the photographers to keep pursuing such images — and new headlines,” they wrote in the book, which is excerpted in this week’s PEOPLE magazine.

Meghan “said little during the call, choosing instead to simply listen to the counsel. But after hanging up, she felt frustrated and emotional.”

“While she knew the aide had good intentions, the surreal experience of having someone from her boyfriend’s office tell her what kind of jewelry to wear or not to smile at a photographer was too much.”

According to the book’s authors, a “distraught” Meghan then called a friend and said: “I can’t win. They make out like I’m to blame for these pictures, that it looks like I’m encouraging them, that me even acknowledging the cameras may not be sending the right message.”

“I don’t know what to say. It was only yesterday that people online were saying I look miserable in pictures, because I was trying to just ignore the [photographer].”

Finding Freedom is set to be published next month, and the book will shed light on the couple’s departure from the Royal Family, and the events that led to them stepping down from their roles at the end of March.

The biography was reportedly written “with the participation of those closest to the couple”, but Harry and Meghan have denied being involved with the book whatsoever.

A spokesperson for the couple has said: “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were not interviewed and did not contribute to Finding Freedom.”

“This book is based on the authors’ own experiences as members of the royal press corps and their own independent reporting.”
