The singer was "slowly losing the plot" before the band split in 2016

Liam Payne has admitted that he turned to alcohol at the height of One Direction’s success.

The band shot to fame after they were formed on The X Factor back in 2010, and endured an intense few years of touring before they went on an “indefinite hiatus” in 2016.

Speaking to The Guardian, the singer revealed he turned to booze between shows when they were cooped up in their hotel rooms.

He said: “Doing a show to however many thousands of people, then being stuck by yourself in a country where you can’t go out anywhere – what else are you going to do? The minibar is always there.”

The father-of-one also admitted that he used to take epilepsy medication as a mood stabiliser, to deal with the ‘erratic highs and lows’ of fame.

“I just needed a little bit of help to keep me stable – but under certain lights on stage or during interviews, I wouldn’t be able to tell them my name,” Liam confessed.

The 26-year-old said he was “slowly losing the plot” before the band announced their split in 2016.

Cracks started to show after Zayn left the band in March 2015, and Liam said: “It was a point where every day, you didn’t know whether it was going to be the end.”

“It was so touch and go, at every single show. I was slowly losing the plot.”
