Leo Varadkar to invite royals Prince William and Kate Middleton to Ireland

Leo Varadkar is preparing to formally invite the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William and Kate Middleton, to Ireland.

According to the Irish Examiner, our new Taoiseach told staff at the Irish embassy in London to examine the logistics behind organising the royal visit.

Leo reportedly spoke to Dan Mulhall, the Irish ambassador to London, about organising the visit while he was over in the UK meeting Prime Minister Theresa May.

Tourism Minister Brendan Griffin confirmed the news by saying, “This would be the next step and, of course, the next generation in Anglo-Irish relations, with the young couple visiting.”

In 2011, Prince William’s grandmother Queen Elizabeth II became the first monarch to visit the Republic of Ireland since 1911, and both British and Irish governments agreed that the four-day visit helped Anglo-Irish relations.

The royal couple have already visited a number of EU capitals and countries including France, Germany, and most recently Poland, this year.
