Lauren Silverman rushed to Simon Cowell’s rescue last night, after he broke down on stage at a charity ball.

The 56-year-old shed his tough guy exterior at the Together for Short Lives charity gala on Wednesday night, as he became overcome with emotion.

After a film was shown of Simon spending time with terminally-ill children as part of his work with the charity, the music mogul took to the stage to deliver a speech – but was too upset to speak.

An onlooker told The Sun: “Simon struggled to hold back tears as he watched a video of him and Lauren spending the day with terminally-ill children at the ceremony.”

“He was clearly really moved by the experience and reliving it in front of a room full of people proved too much for him.”

“Lauren acted at just the right moment and came to Simon’s rescue so he wasn’t alone – she was his perfect support.”

Speaking on Simon’s behalf, Lauren told the crowd: “Oh God, I think what Simon was trying to say is that tonight is very important because no matter how much money we raise it’s also about raising awareness and I think anyone in this room…”

“I don’t even know what I’m saying I’m just trying to speak for Simon – anyone in this room who’s a mum or a dad or who has a heart frankly can understand that seeing somebody in these situations is inconceivable – unimaginable.”

After taking a few minutes to compose himself, Simon returned to the podium to say, “I would say to anyone genuinely just go down there and see for yourself what it means to the families, to the staff to show your support.”

“Everything you think is a problem in your lives, trust me it is nothing. I think what you guys do is incredible – I couldn’t do this on a day to day basis.”

The star-studded gala, which was also attended by Ayda Field, Peter Andre, and James Arthur, raised a massive £350,000 for the charity.

Simon, who has four-year-son Eric with Lauren, personally donated £100k to the charity, which supports children and young people who are expected to have short lives.
