Kerry Katona’s mum explains why she gave her daughter SPEED when she was just 14

The singer's mum has admitted that she was a bad mother

Kerry Katona’s mum broke down in tears on Good Morning Britain, as she admitted to giving her famous daughter speed when she was just 14-years-old.

The Atomic Kitten star appeared on the show alongside her mum Sue, who confessed to giving her daughter drugs when she was just a teenager.

A tearful Sue recalled how she told Kerry the white powder was “sherbet”, and said, “Obviously, it’s not a nice thing that I’d done. It’s embarrassing, it was silly.”

“It was dangerous, it was unforgivable. But I wasn’t in the right frame of mind. I can only say I was off my head.”

“When I’d done it, I worked in a pub and I thought it would be fun. She was my mate, not my daughter, and it was totally, totally wrong.”

Kerry then explained, “My mum had a lot of mental health issues as well. My mum had a really bad [childhood]. I’m not defending what my mum did.”

“I would never do that to my children. But I broke the cycle. My mum had a terrible upbringing. My mum had manic [depression], which they now call bipolar, my mum was a self-harmer, my mum was passed around from pillar to post. Again, I’m not defending anything.”

Sue added, “You know, it’s not an excuse, my past, of what I did to Kerry. If anything, it should have taught me not to do it to Kerry, because it was done to me. So you’d have thought I’d have had more sense in not to do it to my daughter.”

Kerry, who has been open about her addiction issues, also insisted that she would have gotten into drugs anyway as she started hanging out with a bad crowd.

“And I’ll be honest, my mum gave me drugs, and I think if my mum hadn’t given me the drugs, I think maybe I’d have done it anyway, because of the people I was surrounded by…

“I thought it was normal. That’s my thing, now I thought people who didn’t do drugs were snobs. That’s how it was for me. I didn’t know any better.”

Kerry and Sue are set to celebrate 10 years of sobriety in 2019.
