Kate Garraway’s husband Derek could remain in hospital until December

Kate Garraway’s husband Derek could remain in hospital until December.

Derek, 53, was hospitalised last March after contracting the coronavirus, but sadly he remains seriously ill.

A documentary on the former lobbyist’s health battle called ‘Finding Derek’ aired on ITV on Tuesday night, which revealed he could still be in hospital at the end of the year.

At the end of the documentary, it was revealed that Derek’s rehabilitation is “continuing” and that “doctors have extended the option of keeping him in hospital until December 2021.”

Kate admitted she’s trying to “piece together” the life she and her husband had before he got sick, but said it was “quite complicated”.

“There’s been times where I’ve thought: ‘Am I actually grieving for the person I’m married to or am I fighting to hold onto that person?'”

“Should I be trying to fight to hold onto that person or should I be trying to adjust?” the Good Morning Britain presenter asked.

In a heartbreaking scene, Derek told his wife over FaceTime: “Kate, there’s no way out. There’s no way out.”

Kate, 53, replied: “There’s not way out in terms of what?”

“I’ve got to the point where I just think f*** it. Just f*** it,” Derek said.

Kate asked: “As in die?” to which Derek responded through tears: “Yes. I don’t know how to cope, I don’t know how to cope.”

Kate reassured her husband, saying: “You don’t know how to cope with it. OK. I know you feel like you’re trapped in your head and it’s terrifying. But you’re coming home, you’re coming back to your life and you will be the person, even better than you were before. You will be.”

“I will find a way to make it better. Okay. I promised you that I would save you and I’m gonna save you I will find a way, but you just have to hang in there.”

Taking to Twitter after the documentary aired, viewers hailed Kate “incredible” for her strength during what has been a very difficult year for her family.
