Kate Garraway says son Billy was ’emotional’ celebrating birthday without his dad Derek

Kate Garraway has admitted that it was a difficult weekend for her family, with her husband in hospital during their son’s birthday celebrations.

The presenter’s husband Derek Draper has been in ICU since the end of March after contracting COVID-19.

The 53-year-old admitted her son Billy “was emotional” over the weekend as his father was unable to celebrate his 11th birthday with the family.

“[Bill] was completely overwhelmed. He was emotional too of course,” she admitted on Good Morning Britain this morning.

“Because of the situation with his dad being in hospital and all of the challenges we’re facing with mixing at the moment, he’s having four birthdays.”

“I said we’re going to do it all again when dad gets better,” she added.

Kate’s I’m A Celebrity: Get Me Out Of Here co-star Roman Kemp surprised Billy for his jungle-themed celebrations over the weekend, as he battled it out with the guests in a nerf-gun war.

“I was super nervous about Bill’s birthday this year – we usually have a family do with grandparents & a few of his friends but obviously this not possible,” Kate shared with her Instagram followers.

“We are seeing grandparents separately but wanted to do something for him & his mates in the garden. Derek is so brilliant at this, organising treasure hunts & boys own adventures so mentioned to @myleeneklass really didn’t want to let Bill down & did she know anyone with a tent we could borrow in case it was wet.”

“Little did I know what I was unleashing! She is in her element! At 8.30 this morning she arrived with Apollo in tow to supervise the brilliant @sleepyteepeeuk to set up the most amazing jungle camp ever!!!”

“Feel so emotional but know Derek will be so proud and pleased,” she added.

Kate Garraway previously admitted that her children have “effectively lost their dad”, who remained in a “desperate situation”.

Although Derek is technically free from the virus, the illness wreaked havoc on his body, and doctors have told Kate he may “never recover”.

She gave an update of her husband’s situation on her return to Good Morning Britain earlier this month.

“It’s a strange word coma, he was induced which was what they were doing then because it was a way of resting the lungs, of course they’re no longer keeping him in the coma but he’s not fully awake.”

“There’s two types of coma, there’s the one we think of as vegetative coma, and the one Derek is in which is a minimum station of consciousness, wonderfully his eyes are open but we have no real knowledge of what he can see or hear.”

“It is a very desperate situation, it’s very very difficult, of course there’s fantastic hope he’s still alive, the doctors do keep saying it’s a miracle he’s still alive,” she continued.

“Six times they said he’s not going to make it, and obviously you couldn’t visit…”

“So he’s been very very sick, but it’s a new disease, there’s no data, so what they can say is it’s great he’s here.”

“There’s flickers of hope, his lungs are starting to recover, his kidneys are doing better, his liver, but they don’t know how much better he can get.”

Kate and Derek tied the knot back in 2005, and the couple share two children – Darcey, 14, and Billy, 11.
