Kate Garraway reveals husband Derek Draper travelled to Mexico for specialist treatment

Kate Garraway has revealed her husband Derek Draper travelled to Mexico to receive specialist treatment.

The former lobbyist was hospitalized in March 2020 after contracting Covid-19, and he then spent over a year in ICU as he suffered long-term damage to his organs.

Derek was released from hospital in April last year, but his still requires around-the-clock care.

During a new interview, Kate revealed she and Derek travelled 11,000-miles to go to a specialist treatment clinic in Monterrey, where Derek will return next month for a 28 day stint.

Speaking to The Sun about the trip, Kate said: “It took weeks and weeks of planning, and when I told Derek about this place he was excited. He is just so desperate to get better – he will do anything he can to make that happen.”

“I think actually there’s a huge amount of hope for him to improve. I think the treatment could be positive. I want to be slightly careful about saying too much, because I’m aware everybody will go, ‘What is the trial?'”

“And I don’t want to start something, offering up false hope to others who might be in a similar position. But I’m just so desperate to be able to give a happy ending — for Derek mainly, but also for everybody who asks me every day how he’s getting on.”

The Good Morning Britain presenter continued: “I’m desperate to be able to tell them he’s getting better . . . but of course he’s not out of the woods yet.”

“It’s hard to say how the treatment went so far, as it’s very early in the treatment programme and he will need much more. We are also still waiting for final analysis of all the scans, but I like there were a lot of positives.”

Speaking about the vital trip to Mexico to her co-stars Richard Madeley and Susanna Reid, Kate added: “He is a very extreme case and so he is useful for the trial. It could offer a lot of hope for people who have less bad Covid. He lost out on the steroids at the start and the vaccine.”

“Thanks to British Airways for the flight. We are seeing flickers of hope. There is now more information about how we can help Derek in a practical way.”

“You get signs and flickers that he is still there. But he has neurological fatigue and brain fog and what that is we don’t know. But in the gaps in between he is 100 per cent Derek.”

“I now wheel him to his office space, and he joked it was so untidy. So he is very much there. I hope people get some hope from the end of this doc,” she said.

Caring for Derek is set to air tonight on ITV, and viewers will get a candid view of what it’s like caring for Derek on a 24 hour basis.
