Kate Garraway has admitted she’s “desperate” for her husband Derek to “take a step forward” in his recovery.

The presenter’s husband has been in ICU since the end of March, after contracting the coronavirus.

On Good Morning Britain today, Kate opened up about her recent visit to see Derek, and admitted it was “tough”.

“I did go and see him yesterday and it was quite a tough visit,” she told her co-host Ben Shephard.

“What the doctors said to me was: ‘Sometimes a day when nothing has gone backwards and nothing has gone wrong is a positive day.'”

“I am desperate for a step forward and I’m sure he is always too. But it’s always lovely to see him and so it’s wonderful to have the chance to do that,” she added.

The mum-of-two also revealed their son Billy turns 11 years old today, and missing the birthday was hard on her husband.

“He’s had a tough couple of weeks and you know it’s the first birthday he has missed. It’s Billy’s birthday today so I think I was extra emotional. And you think of you know, the day he was born and Derek’s involvement and how much Derek would like to be present today.”

The 53-year-old has been celebrating Billy’s birthday since last weekend, admitting her son was “completely overwhelmed” and “extra emotional” without his father at the celebrations.

“Because of the situation with his dad being in hospital and all of the challenges we’re facing with mixing at the moment, he’s having four birthdays.”

“I said we’re going to do it all again when dad gets better,” she added.

Although Derek is technically free from the coronavirus, the illness wreaked havoc on his body – and doctors have told Kate that he may “never recover”.

She gave an update of her husband’s situation on her return to Good Morning Britain earlier this month.

“It’s a strange word coma, he was induced which was what they were doing then because it was a way of resting the lungs, of course they’re no longer keeping him in the coma but he’s not fully awake,” she said.

“There’s two types of coma, there’s the one we think of as vegetative coma, and the one Derek is in which is a minimum station of consciousness, wonderfully his eyes are open but we have no real knowledge of what he can see or hear.”

“It is a very desperate situation, it’s very very difficult, of course there’s fantastic hope he’s still alive, the doctors do keep saying it’s a miracle he’s still alive,” she continued.

“Six times they said he’s not going to make it, and obviously you couldn’t visit…”

“So he’s been very very sick, but it’s a new disease, there’s no data, so what they can say is it’s great he’s here.”

“There’s flickers of hope, his lungs are starting to recover, his kidneys are doing better, his liver, but they don’t know how much better he can get.”

Kate and Derek tied the knot back in 2005, and the couple share two children – Darcey, 14, and Billy, 11.

During the latest episode of #GossChats, social media star and TV presenter James Patrice addresses the recent cancellation of Dancing With The Stars, being single during lockdown and creating viral hits with his family.
