Dr Alex George appointed mental health ambassador following the tragic death of his younger brother

Dr Alex George has been appointed as a mental health ambassador by UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

The Love Island star, who’s 19-year-old brother Llŷr tragically took his own life in July, has been actively campaigning for better mental health provision.

The A&E doctor met with Boris on Wednesday morning, and shared the exciting news with his 1.7 million Instagram followers.

The 30-year-old wrote: “WE DID IT!! You called and the PM answered!!”

“I have been appointed as the Ambassador for Mental Health. It hasn’t sunk in yet and I’m not sure it ever will. I am truly humbled.”

“In my role, I will be working closely with the Government to make mental health an absolute priority. Never has mental health been more important than now.”

“From schools to universities, the NHS and the wider public, MENTAL HEALTH MATTERS. For the current as well as future generations, we must do everything in our power to bring meaningful change.”

“Nothing will bring my brother back but if I can make a positive impact that saves even one life, it will be worth moving mountains for,” Alex added.

In the comment section, the reality star added: “I am so emotional, thank you so so much everyone for making this happen 💙💙”

Alex’s fellow Love Island stars took to the comment section to congratulate him, with Rosie Williams writing: “Awe Alex I’m so so so proud of you!! You’ll do an amazing job!! ♥️”

Laura Anderson commented: “Congratulations Alex, you are the best man for the job. Paving hope for the youth of today and EVERYONE is proud of you, especially your Llyr. All my support as always. Love and appreciate your strength more than you know 💜”

Maura Higgins simply wrote: “Wow 🙌 🙌 🙌”.

Alex has received high praise for the work he has done during the coronavirus pandemic.

As well as campaigning for mental health, he has been working on the frontline at A&E department in London’s University Hospital Lewisham.

The doctor has been using his platform to share the reality of the pandemic, urging his followers to follow government guidelines.
