Coronation Street star breaks silence after abruptly axed from show

Sean Wilson has broken his silence after being abruptly kicked off Coronation Street earlier this month.

The actor had returned to the soap as part of his on-screen ex-wife Gail Platt’s emotional exit storyline.

The 59-year-old had already begun filming his return scenes and was set to reappear on screen in October as part of Helen Worth’s exit storyline.

Speaking for the first time since he was axed, Sean took to social media on Tuesday to say to fans: “Thanks for all the love xxx.”

Sean posted a photo of a barn with a wooden stage and lights spelling out the word “love” on X, formerly Twitter.

Sean played Martin for twenty years before moving to New Zealand with his family in 2018.

Before leaving, he made one more trip to Weatherfield to settle his differences with David, who was saddened by his father’s departure.

Sean Wilson, who was set to return to the cobbles as Martin Platt, six years after his last appearance in Weatherfield, unexpectedly left the soap in August.

According to The Sun, the actor’s departure came as a huge shock, and the cast was unaware of the reason behind it.

A representative for the soap stated that the actor left “for personal reasons,” and now none of his scenes will be aired, with Gail’s entire exit storyline being frantically rewritten by bosses.

In July, Sean returned to the cobbles to film his first scenes and had already recorded episodes with many of the soap’s stars.

A source told the Daily Mail: “It has come as a complete and utter shock to everyone – and his sudden exit has rocked everyone involved with Corrie. Sean was loving his time on the show, and he was very popular on set.”

“He had filmed scenes with loads of the cast, but then suddenly he was summoned to head office, and later it filtered out he wouldn’t be returning or his scenes airing, but no explanation offered.”

“Clearly it’s a major blow for bosses who must now find a new magical and happy ending for Helen – but they are confident they’ll pull it out of the bag, and give viewers something wonderful.”

An ITV spokesperson told MailOnline: “Sean Wilson has stepped down from filming for personal reasons.”

Sean’s agent told the publication: “Neither he nor I will be making any further comment or statement.”
