Bad news for Harry Styles as new single sales are ‘disappointingly low’

Although Harry Styles’ debut solo single Sign Of The Times has finally reached number one, the track has suffered disappointingly low sales.

In fact, Harry’s first-week figure of 62,900 is half the number achieved by his former bandmate Zayn Malik’s debut single Pillowtalk.

In comparison, Little Mix’s Shout Out To My Ex registered a figure of more than 95,000, while Olly Murs’ 2010 debut sold 93,000.

Streaming-wise, Harry’s 3.5million was way below Ed Sheeran’s 6.8million for Shape Of You, as sources are now saying that his comeback effort failed to capture his more mature target audience.

A senior music industry insider told The Sun, “Harry has waited so long to release his music, so the figures have ensured it’s become an anticlimax. Instead of sticking to his mainstream roots he’s tried to come across edgy and arty – going against the formula which made One Direction a phenomenon.

“The strategy has completely backfired and Harry and his team will be concerned.”

Making things even worse, right after Harry released his debut single, a Spotify glitch meant many fans couldn’t locate his single, missing out on valuable streaming hits.

While Harry’s path to number one was expected to be a one-horse race, he ended up embroiled in a chart battle with Ed Sheeran’s Shape Of You, which was released six weeks earlier.
