Amber Gill recalls online abuse she received while on Love Island

Amber Gill has recalled the online abuse she received while on Love Island.

The Newcastle native appeared on the hit dating show back in 2019, going on to win the show with Irish contestant Greg O’Shea.

During her appearance on Good Morning Britain on Monday, the former beauty technician sympathized with the family of 2021 contestant Chloe Burrows – who have been receiving cruel messages and death threats since she entered the show.

Amber said: “Whilst I was in there, what my family had to deal with was a lot. By the time I got out though I had won, so I got a barrage of nice messages so I missed all the bad stuff.”

“It’s horrible because they [Chloe’s family] didn’t sign themselves up for it and that’s what really upset me about when my family had to look at it. I signed myself up for this it’s fine, they didn’t.”

Islanders do not have phones while on the show and their families and friends take care of their social media accounts, so Chloe is unaware of the messages she has been receiving.

Amber added: “I’m just glad she doesn’t know what’s happening at the minute. She’s protected from it.”

The 23-year-old said that people “get too invested in a show that’s just for entertainment purposes”.

“Social media creates a barrier where people think it’s okay to say whatever you want and that these people aren’t real when they are.”

It comes ahead of Amber’s new mental health series with 2018 contestant Kem Cetinay, which premieres on ITV Hub tomorrow, July 8.

The show, entitled The Full Treatment, will see Kem and Amber interview a series of stars about mental health while giving them a makeover.
