Tv3's Mark Cagney: 'When my wife died I fell apart, I was completely lost'

Presenter Mark Cagney has revealed he nearly fell apart after his wife Ann Humphries died.

The TV3 star lost his first wife in 1991 when she suffered a brain hemorrhage.

Now Mark has said it was the worst time in his life, but is lucky to have met his second wife Audrey Byrne.

“The thrust of my life was to give the best possible life to my wife, who I adored,” he said.

“I was left bereft I didn’t know what to do,. I didn’t have a reason to get up. Other people deal with it in different ways but I was just lost, I despaired.

“I was lucky to have her in the first place because she made a man of me, and I was lucky to meet Audrey Byrne because she saved me,” he said.

Speaking on The Saturday Night Show with Brendan O’Connor, Mark said Audrey saved him from falling to pieces.

“She has had to deal with her ghost for a very long time, and it shows how much of a remarkable woman she is.”

“I could have fallen apart when she left. But Audrey fell in love with me and told me to cop on.

“Audrey had lost her brother, she was very close to him. she was one of the few people of my age who had an understanding of it.

“She said to me ‘you better start dealing with this.’ I’m a glass half full person not half empty.

“But I was incredibly angry with God. there are scumbags going around doing awful things who are still here, and I couldn’t understand why she was gone.”

“I can be extremely bitter and resentful or be grateful for what I had. I had her for 16 years so I’m grateful now. I have been incredibly lucky,” he added.
