The top 20 shows in Ireland in 2016 has been revealed with RTE programmes dominating the charts – it’s no surprise that The Late Late Toy Show came out on top.
With 1.57million people tuning it, this year’s annual special was The Jungle Book themed and had special appearances from some of Ireland’s most famous faces, like rugby star Jamie Heaslip.
A spokesperson for RTE spoke out about the huge numbers and said, “These figures confirm that, despite the fact that Irish audiences have access to more than 800 channels, RTE is still their television broadcaster of choice when it comes to accessing quality home-grown programming.”

Following the Late Late Toy Show was some of the most popular matches in the country during the Euros with Ireland’s match against France in second place – the famous match that made Robbie Brady a house hold name
“Last year was an extremely busy year for RTÉ with the general election, the 2016 centenary celebrations, the Euros and the Olympics and it is heartening to see that when it comes to the big events, Irish audiences still turn to RTÉ when they want quality, comprehensive coverage.”
As sport triumphed, Brendan O’Carroll’s Mrs. Brown’s Boys also proved to have been very popular in 2016 with three of his shows making it onto the list in 13th, 15th and 20th place with over 2million viewers tuning in to all three episodes.
