The best new movies to watch Netflix this week

Netflix has dropped a range of new movies to their streaming service.

From musicals to comedies, tear-jerkers to true-crime, we have rounded up some of our favourite films to watch on this grey and gloomy week.

Here’s our top picks this week:

The Truman Show (1998)

The Truman Show sees Jim Carey star as Truman Burbank – the unsuspecting star of his very own 24-hour reality show.

The 1998 comedy-drama follows Truman as he comes to the realisation that his seemingly ordinary life is in fact staged on a large set populated by actors for a television show, which he then tries to escape from.

The critically acclaimed film earned numerous nominations at the Golden Globes and Academy Awards following its’ release and is a must-see dark-comedy.

The Green Mile (1999)

Stephen King wrote the novel that this crime-drama is based on, which stars Tom Hanks and Michael Clarke Duncan.

Tom Hanks plays death row corrections officer Paul Edgecomb, supervising inmate John Coffey who is convicted of raping and murdering two white girls.

When John begins to demonstrate supernatural powers, Paul desperately tries to stop the condemned man’s execution.

The 1999 film was nominated for four Academy Awards – Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor for Michael Clarke Duncan, Best Sound and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Mamma Mia (2008)

Need we say more?

Following the release of the Mamma Mia sequel – Here We Go Again – last month, Netflix have now released the 2008 prequel.

The feel-good musical whisks viewers away to a beautiful island in Greece, while singing and dancing to hit songs from ABBA.

The story follows Amanda Seyfried as Sophie, who is preparing to get married despite her mother Donna’s (played by Meryl Streep) reservations.

The Break-Up (2006)

Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn star in this 2006 romantic-comedy, who play a steady couple who realise they have many reasons to break-up and none to stay together.

The couple’s break-up turns nasty as they fight for ownership of their luxury condo in Chicago.

The pair battle it out in a realistic, honest depiction of a modern-day break-up.

Athlete A (2020)

In a new original documentary, Netflix sheds light on abuses that took place in the USA Gymnastics team.

The film follows the Indianapolis Star investigative journalists as they reveal the extensive cover-up that allowed abuse to thrive within elite-level gymnastics for more than two decades.

Athlete A investigates the abuses that took place by couches and the team’s doctor in a heart-breaking, true-crime documentary.

On the latest episode of Goss Chats, Ali Ryan sits down with Selling Sunset’s Christine Quinn, who reveals the real drama between the women on the show, and how she battled coronavirus on her wedding day.

#GossChats is sponsored by top Irish aesthetic clinic Haus of JeJuve, which is now back open for bookings.
