RTE could dump IFTAs next year after shambolic broadcast

RTE could be set to dump the IFTAs – after viewers branded it the worst television awards ceremony ever.

The State station was left fuming after sound issues and a 25 minute run over left viewers complaining online.

Now Montrose revealed they will be speaking to IFTAs – who hired their own production crew for the broadcast – about its future.

A spokeswoman said: “It’s an IFTA produced show and RTE will be looking into all the technical issues.”

“RTE will be looking into the show itself and will be reviewing every element. It’s a difficult event to televise because it’s happening live and there’s a tight turnaround time.

“We’re looking at the issues aired and we’ll review them.”

In a statement, the IFTAs accepted there were issues with the event – whose repeat was scrapped by RTE because of the extra time.

They said: “Over the past 11 years IFTA has produced superb award ceremonies, which are among the highest rated shows in Ireland.

“However there were, unfortunately, technical issues in the room at this year’s ceremony with regards to sound production across the outside broadcast of the show.

“Acoustics in the room created difficulties for the sound engineers and technical delays caused a knock-on effect to the evening’s schedule.”
