RTE cost-cuts ignites fears that Fair City set to be axed

The show has been running since 1989

Fear grows for fans of Fairy City that the popular soap is set to be axed due to RTE cost-cutting measures.

The Dublin-based show first aired on the broadcaster’s channel in 1989 and has gained a massive following since.

Concerns grow as it was revealed that the station will outsource it’s children’s TV programmes – and now more shows are in jeopardy.

“That option has always been on the cards and two or three years ago they did try and cost it off site,” an insider told the Irish Independent about outsourcing shows.

“There was a rumour about the young people’s department in recent months which has now come true. So people are concerned about what will happen next.”

Fair City regular Jim Bartley, who plays Bela Doyle on the long-running show, admitted it would be “strange” for RTE to outsource such a lucrative programme.

“Whatever they intend to do I have no information on, but if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” he told the publication.

“I think the way it is produced and directed, RTÉ have done a great job.”
