Republic of Telly has been AXED

The comedy show ran for 15 seasons

Republic of Telly has been axed after 15 seasons on RTÉ 2.

Back in November, the Irish Sun revealed that the show was set to be axed after RTÉ revealed financial pressure, with a loss of €20 million in 2016 alone – and now, the satirical show been cancelled to make space for a new comedy and entertainment series.

Dermot Whelan, Neil Delamere, and Jennifer Maguire rose to stardom from the show, and have since went onto great things.

The light-hearted show also facilitated comedy spin off’s for the likes of Damo & Ivor, The Rubberbandits, and Bridget and Eamon.

RTÉ 2 boss Adrian Lynch told the Irish Mirror, “Republic of Telly has been a brilliant vehicle for developing talent both on and off-screen, from Damo & Ivor to Bridget and Eamon and The Rubberbandits.

“It was a brilliantly irreverent show which broke the mould in how it engaged with viewers and brought Irish comedy acts to a wider audience both on RTÉ 2 and on social media.

“We want to thank host Kevin McGahern and all the hosts and teams involved in making the show over the last eight years.”
