Plagiarism claims plague popular RTE drama Charlie

RTE series Charlie has been hit with controversy after a U.S. journalist has claimed his article from nine years ago was plagiarised for the show.

American journalist Brendan Kiley has argued that some of the script in the second episode of Charlie, which aired last Sunday 11th on RTE 1 – was ripped off from a newspaper article of his.

The journalist is now demanding a writing credit on the political drama series which was penned by award winning playwright and scriptwriter Colin Teevan.

RTE have now launched an investigation into the claims with a spokesperson for the national broadcaster saying “We are looking into this and will respond to any claims.”

The dialogue in question centres around a scene in Charlie, when former Taoiseach Charlie Haughey was eating a delicacy while dining with the late French president Francois Mitterand.

In the scene Haughey is seen eating an ortolan, a type of songbird, while the French president describes the food.
