Peaky Blinders star admits Liam Neeson helped him prepare

Sam Neill has admitted that he turned to Irish stars Liam Neeson and James Nesbitt to help perfect his Irish accent.

The Peaky Blinders star plays Major Chester Campbell in the show, a Northern Irish inspector working under Winston Churchill who’s hellbent on tracking down communists and thugs in Birmingham.

“I did consult Liam Neeson and Jimmy Nesbitt because they are obviously to the manor born,” he said.

The actor was born in Tyrone to an Irish mother but his father was from New Zealand so they moved to the South Island of New Zealand when he was about 7 years old.

“I got a couple of lessons from them, which was great but they were brought up just 10 miles from each other and speak with completely different voices,” he told Graham Norton on his BBC chat show.

“I thought I would just relax and do my own thing.”

The Graham Norton Show airs tonight at 10.35pm BBC One.
