EXCLUSIVE! Pat Kenny reveals new UTV show will rival Prime Time: 'We'll broadcast unfolding news'

His new programme on UTV Ireland has been kept under wraps, but Pat Kenny has revealed the highly anticipated hour long show will deal with “unfolding news.”

The former RTE host announced his deal with the channel last month, and while many believed he would go up against Ryan Tubridy on the Late Late Show, Pat has said the show will deal with news.

“It’s starting in first quarter of 2015,” he told Goss.ie.

“It’s an audience based show but after that it’s a work in progress. It’s an hour long.”

The Frontline: Will Pat deal with current affairs again?

“Television watching is changing. The things that people want to watch are things that depend on happening in the now,” he explained.

“Like sport. Who records a Manchester United game and then watches it back, they don’t. They might manage to watch it an hour later but any longer than that they are going to know the result.

“Unfolding news will be important. For example last night with the Scottish Independence vote, no one was going to record that, everyone watched it live,” he told Goss.ie.

“People want to watch things as they unfold, so whatever we create, whatever form it will be, it’s going to be something people want to watch as it’s transmitted.”

Speaking at the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Alpha,  Pat was still reluctant to reveal the exact details of his new show, however he admitted he will have a lot of creative control.

“I’ll have a big input into the show. At the moment we are going through the thinking stage, tossing up ideas in the air.

“We’re wondering what we should be doing, what will grip an audience. And that’s a challenge,” he said.

Although UTV Ireland will launch for the first time in January 2015, Pat said he was happy to join the new channel as former RTE commissioner Mary Curtis is involved.

“Mary Curtis first approached me. I’ve known Mary from RTE. So it gave me a great deal of confidence when you’re talking to someone who knows your work and I knew her work.

“So for me this isn’t a leap into the unknown, it’s a leap into the familiar.

“What I’ve learned in those 25 years I’ll bring to UTV Ireland. Whatever the program turns out to be.”
