This Oscar winner will be starring in True Detective’s third season

True Detective season three has found its star.

Mahershala Ali will be the lead actor in the upcoming third season, he confirmed on Instagram.

HBO’s President of Programming Casey Bloys also shared the news at the Television Critics Association press tour, adding, “I have read five scripts for a third season and I think they’re terrific.”

The announcement comes after rumours started swirling last month that Mahershala was in talks to join the series.

Further details about the third season, including the plot, are yet to be revealed.

Earlier this year, Mahershala won the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for Moonlight, making him the first Muslim actor to win an Oscar.

He is also well-known for his roles in Luke Cage, House of Cards and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

True Detective’s first season, starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, came out in 2014 and was a huge success.

Season two, which was released the following year and starred Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams, was met with mixed reactions from fans and critics alike.
