Love/Hate's Laurence Kinlan forced to grow up after dad's heroin death at 10

Love/Hate star Laurence Kinlan has revealed he was forced to grow up faster after the heroin death of his dad when he was 10.

The TV star grew up in inner city Dublin near where anti-drugs independent TD Tony Gregory came from, who he plays in Citizen Charlie.

And Laurence – who plays Elmo in the RTE show – admits the drug problem especially hit him after the death of his father.

He told the Sunday Times: “My dad died of heroin. This area was just poisoned with that, the late 1980s and early 1990s.

“My dad died when I was 10 but, Jesus Christ, when you’re in this kind of area, you grow up a lot faster.

“[Drugs were] going on all the time. You see it now, maybe outside the Abbey [Theatre], but that’s not a patch on how it was then.

“What Tony Gregory done was a fight to get that out of the area. And he did that.”

Laurence has been back at work on the Love/Hate set this month, but has been forced to mix his time between rehearsals for Breaking Dad — the latest Ross O’Carroll-Kelly play.
