The Love Island boss has said that the show is tackling childhood obesity.
Former islander, Dr. Alex George, recently called on the show to have more diversity.
Speaking to The Daily Telegraph he said: “I think diversity is very important, not just in the way you look but in backgrounds and what people do for a living.”
The show has received a lot of backlash regarding the contestants, with many fans criticising Love Island for only having very attractive people on the programme.
Paul Mortimer, controller of digital channels on ITV, has stated: “It’s a very aspirational programme for our audience. It’s the perfect holiday that they can only aspire towards.”
“There’s also another conversation going on at the moment about childhood obesity. If you want to look like these guys on Love Island, you have to work out. We make no excuses that people more beautiful than us are entitled to go into a villa for eight weeks and find love.”
“We cast sexy people, we’re a sexy channel. Those people, by the way, they work quite hard. There’s a gym, we show people working out,” Paul continued.
The show has also been criticised for showing cosmetic surgery adverts during the breaks of programme.
