Laurence Kinlan: 'I was mates with Heath Ledger, I was devastated when he died'

Love/Hate actor Laurence Kinlan has revealed he had a close relationship with Heath Ledger.

The Dublin star worked with the ill-fated actor on Australian movie Ned Kelly in 2003.

“He was such a lovely person. As soon as I landed in Melbourne he was so good to me.  I was still young then,” he said.

“We were good mates, we played brothers in the film. Myself and Charlene (my wife) flew out to LA a lot and stayed with Heath in his house.”

“I was absolutely heart broken when he died. We had become such good mates,” he admitted.

The actor said he was devastated when Heath was found dead in 2008.

Laurence made the comments while appearing on TV3 chat show Late Lunch Live, the actor was promoting the Celeb Golf Classic in aid of The Marie Keating Foundation.

Now Laurence is best known for playing Elmo in hit RTE drama Love/Hate. And the actor said he wouldn’t want to be any other character.

“Fran is great, I love Fran. You could never do what Peter does with Fran and what Tom has done with Nidge.

“I’m happy with Elmo. It’s hard to imagine anything else,” he explained.

Meanwhile Laurence revealed he was a trouble maker as a child, adding that drama helped him focus.

“It kept me out of trouble as a kid. I was getting up to all sorts, I was a little Elmo I suppose. It was a brilliant outlet for me.

“It’s funny with Love/Hate because people go ‘you’ve got a big break’, but I left school when I was 15, I’ve been doing this for years,” he said.
