The Late Late Show ratings drop thanks to player popularity

The Late Late Show ratings have significantly dropped, thanks to the popularity of the RTÉ player.

The show’s viewership figures are at an all time low since Ryan Tubridy began hosting the show six years ago, due to viewers choosing to tune in later on the internet.

According to the Irish Mail on Sunday, average viewing numbers are down to 571,200, compared to last year’s figures of 582,800.

The figures prove that modern times have steadily infiltrated the ‘television universe’ – by being able to access TV shows through other platforms.

For example, a massive one million viewers tuned in for Ryan Tubridy’s first Late Late Show in September 2009, which then steadily plummeted to 612,000 viewers in 2014.

Despite the figures, an RTÉ spokesman said the broadcaster isn’t worried, and that the revelation simply reflects ‘the current television universe’.

“The audience is broadly the same, but they are coming to The Late Late Show in different ways – on the iplayer, etc,” he said.

The spokesman revealed that although audience figures have dropped, the show’s market share has increased from 43% to 44% this year.

“While there has been a very modest drop in terms of the thousands watching, The Late Late Show bucked industry trends this year and actually increased its share of the available audience watching at the time,” he said.

The Irish Mail on Sunday also revealed that a senior editorial source has said that an overhaul of the programme is on the agenda for RTÉ’s new director general, Dee Forbes.

“I think even The Late Late Show’s own team would admit it’s in a need of a revamp.

“They had some big nights this year with the Toy Show and Valentine’s night, but it’s week to week where the figures are getting weaker. It could be that the new DG thinks it’s time for change,” he said.
