Jim Carter has confirmed that the sequel to the Downton Abbey movie will begin filming next year.

The actor, who plays Mr. Carson in the hit period drama, revealed that the stars have seen the script for the upcoming film already.

Speaking to Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield on This Morning, Jim said: “Holly, if you promise not to tell anyone, I’ll let you know that we’ve seen a script.”

“The script for a second film is there,” he added.

“We’ve seen it it’s very funny. It’s got all the same characters in, all the regular characters.

“I think the will is that, COVID-willing, we will film it next year,” he added.

“I don’t know if I can trust Phillip to keep this secret,” he joked, “But Holly I know will.”

Jim’s internet cut before Holly and Phillip could ask further questions, but they were left wondering if he had confirmed the fate of Violet Crawley – played by Maggie Smith – who fell ill in the first film.

Phillip said: “Hold on a second. He said everyone is back in the film… but she was terminally ill.

“So obviously she’s still hanging on. Let’s hope so. Oh, it’s a biggie. There’s so many questions!”

The first movie was released in September last year, and was a huge hit at the box office.

All of the original cast returned for the big-screen outing, including Michelle Dockery as Lady Mary Crawley, Laura Carmichael as Lady Edith Crawley, Joanne Froggatt as Anna Bates, Allen Leech as Tom Branson, Hugh Bonneville as Robert Crawley, Elizabeth McGovern as Cora Crawley, and Maggie Smith as Violet Crawley.

The film and television series, which came to an end in 2015, follows the lives of the Crawley family and the servants who worked for them at the turn of the 20th century in an Edwardian English country house.
